What happens when one competitor hides another — and why the answer is a second witness, not a second finish line.
A photo finish camera has one blind spot built into geometry: it sees the finish from exactly one position. Whatever stands between the lens and the far side of the track is, for that moment, invisible. Usually it doesn’t matter — until the day two cyclists sweep to the line together and the nearer rider’s body hides the front wheel the result depends on. No amount of resolution recovers a wheel the camera physically couldn’t see. The fix has to stand somewhere else.
A second witness to the same moment
Put a second camera on the opposite side, aligned to the same finish line, synchronized to the same clock. Now the overlap works in your favour. The second camera is not a second finish line and not a second opinion about reality — it’s a second witness to the same event. Both watched the same plane at the same synchronized moments; if their stories seem to differ, something in the setup is wrong, and finding that out is itself valuable.
Three jobs a second camera can hold
Coverage (seeing what the first can’t), confirmation (a second view for a hard call), and backup (evidence if the primary fails). The third has a stricter requirement: independence. A confirmation camera may share the primary’s computer and power; a true backup camera sharing them isn’t one. Decide which job your second camera holds before the event.
