Why professional finishes are watched by two cameras with two completely different jobs.
An odd truth about the photo finish camera: it can measure who crossed first to the thousandth of a second — and it has no idea who anyone is. It photographs a hair-thin strip of the finish line thousands of times a second, so everything in its image is a competitor mid-lean, sliced through one vertical plane. Perfect for order and time. Rather less perfect for reading a folded bib. So professional setups add a second camera with the opposite talent.
Two questions, two cameras
The photo finish camera answers: in what order, and at what times, did they cross? The ID camera — an ordinary video camera watching the finish area — answers: who are these competitors? Faces, bib numbers, lane positions, horse colours, boat numbers. Neither can do the other’s job; together they answer the only question that matters: who finished when.
The crowded finish
Four runners hit the line together; one bib is folded, another hidden. The official scrubs to the same moment in the ID video, matches singlet colours and lanes to the strip image, and each torso gets its name. Order from one camera, identity from the other.
The one thing that makes it work: synchronization
The whole trick rests on the two recordings agreeing about time — same clock or a precisely known offset, same race identity on both. A perfectly synchronized video attached to the wrong heat is worse than no video. And one boundary keeps the evidence honest: the ID camera identifies; it doesn’t judge. Order and times come from the timing image, where every slice has a timestamp.
