Why timing operators are adding a small panel of physical buttons — and what makes those buttons safe.

Watch a timing operator during a busy stretch: eyes on the finish, one ear on the radio, and a mouse pointer hunting through menus for the same five actions, over and over, under time pressure. Pilots solved this decades ago — the actions you need constantly, under load, belong on physical controls a hand can find while the eyes stay on what matters.

A keyboard where every key is a decision

A Stream Deck is a small panel of programmable buttons, each with its own little screen. One press can arm recording, drop a marker on an unexpected crossing, switch to the ID camera view, or open the judging screen — no menu diving. The gain isn’t only speed. It’s attention: every second spent navigating an interface is a second of finish line nobody is watching.

What separates a good button from a trap

Buttons must show state — armed, recording, connected — so the operator isn’t guessing. Buttons must show their target — a “Publish” button acting on whichever race is selected is a trap; Add marker belongs on a button, delete evidence does not. The explanation worth remembering

Frequent, reversible actions belong under the operator’s fingers; risky, irreversible ones belong behind a confirmation. A good button panel doesn’t just make the work faster — it gives the operator’s attention back to the finish line.
