The most important decision your camera makes takes one millisecond — and most cameras never tell you it happened.
Every digital camera in the world — including the one in your pocket — performs a small act of destruction each time it takes a picture.
The sensor measures far more information than the finished image contains: finer shades of brightness, more colour information, more detail in the shadows. Then, in about a millisecond, the camera makes a series of final decisions — this bright, this contrasty, these colours — compresses the result into a convenient file, and throws the rest away.
For a holiday photo, nobody minds. For an image that decides a race, it’s worth asking: who made those decisions, when — and can they ever be revisited?
The cake and the ingredients
Imagine somebody hands you a finished cake and says: “It’s too sweet. Take some sugar out.”
You can’t. The sugar is baked in. You can add cream, you can scrape off icing, you can disguise the sweetness — but the decision was made in the oven, and it’s permanent.
Now imagine you still have the ingredients and the recipe. Making a less sweet version is easy: adjust, bake again. The original ingredients are untouched, so you can try as many versions as you like.
That is the difference between the two files a camera can save:
- A JPEG is the finished cake. The camera’s decisions about brightness, colour, and contrast are baked in, and the compression has discarded whatever didn’t fit.
- RAW is the ingredients and the recipe. It stores what the sensor actually measured and postpones the decisions — so a human can make them later, calmly, with the actual finish on screen.
RAW is not automatically more beautiful. It is simply less decided.
Why this matters at a finish line
Picture a rushed race morning. A new operator, a changed light, a setting nobody double-checked — and the finish image comes out far too dark. Two horses, nose and nose, somewhere in the shadows.
If the camera saved only a JPEG, the shadow detail was discarded at capture. Brightening the file reveals mush, because the information no longer exists. The camera made its decisions in a millisecond, in the middle of your race day, and there is no appeal.
If the camera saved RAW, the detail is still in the file. At racing line rates, Lion Timing records up to 12-bit RAW — up to 4,096 levels of brightness per pixel, where a JPEG keeps 256. Brighten the image afterwards and the noses come out of the dark, because the measurements were never thrown away.
And note what the correction does not do: it doesn’t move a competitor or change the finish. It produces a new view of the same original measurements — while the original recording stays untouched as the source. That’s why RAW matters most when a result is questioned. Answering a protest with “here is the sensor’s original data, rendered brighter” is a fundamentally stronger position than “here is the processed picture; the original measurements were discarded at capture.”
You don’t defend a verdict with a summary. You defend it with the source.
What RAW cannot do
Let’s keep this honest, because RAW is sometimes sold as magic. It isn’t.
RAW cannot create light that never reached the sensor. It cannot reveal a horse completely hidden behind another horse. It cannot restore a moment that was never recorded, or correct a camera that was aligned to the wrong physical line.
RAW protects what the camera captured. It does not invent what the camera missed. That’s precisely why it’s trustworthy: it is a preservation feature, not an enhancement trick.
Doesn’t everybody need JPEGs anyway?
Yes — and that’s not a contradiction. JPEG is excellent at its actual job: a small, convenient image for results pages, press, social media, and email.
A RAW-first system doesn’t force a choice. It keeps the RAW as the source and generates JPEGs from it whenever a finished image is needed — at any brightness, as often as you like.
The street only runs one way, though. You can always make another JPEG from RAW. Nobody, anywhere, can turn a JPEG back into RAW.
The one question to ask any vendor
Not “how good do the images look?” — every demo image looks good. Ask instead:
“Does the camera record the sensor’s raw data — and can I have that file?”
As far as we know, Lion Timing is the only photo finish system that records RAW as its primary format. We think that in ten years it will seem strange that finish-line evidence was ever stored any other way.

1. A finish image looks too yellow under floodlights. Why does RAW help?
RAW lets the colour decision be made again. The RAW file keeps what the sensor measured, before any colour interpretation was applied. A new view can be created with a better interpretation of “neutral.” A JPEG can also be adjusted, but its first interpretation is already baked in — you are editing the cake, not the recipe.
2. The operator brightens a too-dark RAW image for a protest review. What happens to the original recording?
Nothing — the original stays untouched. Every processed image is a version generated from the RAW source. That’s what makes RAW strong evidence: reviews can begin again from the camera’s original measurements, as often as needed, without ever altering them.
3. Can RAW reveal a competitor who was completely hidden behind another?
No — RAW cannot contain what the sensor never saw. RAW preserves the sensor’s measurements; it doesn’t add to them. A blocked view, a missed recording, or a misaligned camera cannot be fixed by any file format. This limit is worth remembering, because it’s what separates honest RAW value from marketing magic.
4. Which file should be sent to the press after a race?
A JPEG made from the RAW. JPEG is the right format for sharing; RAW is the right format for keeping. A RAW-first workflow gives you both: the untouched source in the archive, and as many convenient JPEGs as the day requires. The mistake is a camera that keeps only the JPEG.
The explanation worth remembering
A JPEG is a finished cake — you’ll never get the eggs back out. RAW keeps the ingredients and the recipe, so when a race day goes wrong, a better version can still be baked from the original.
