The lens was never an accessory.

Most timing cameras are designed, finished — and then someone tells you to go buy a lens. We started with the lens.

A question that quietly decides what a photo finish system really costs, and almost nobody asks in the demo: “Which lenses does your camera accept — who actually sells them — and what will the lens for my venue cost?” We ask it instinctively, because thirty years of video production teaches you that the camera body gets the brochure, but the lens makes the picture.

Why the lens matters brutally more here

A photo finish camera lives at exposures of a fraction of a millisecond — each slice gets 1/5,000 of a second of light or less. At those exposures, the lens aperture is the light budget: an F1.5 lens feeds the sensor several times more light than a modest zoom. Meanwhile the finish plane must be critically sharp across the full width of the track. Put a poor or wrong lens on the best camera in the world, and you’ve bought the wrong system.

The mount decides your freedom

A lens mount is like a power plug: it decides whose equipment you can use. We built around the C-mount and CS-mount standards — the native mounts of the industrial and machine-vision world — which opens the largest, most competitive, most affordable professional lens catalog on earth. The alternative, a camera that only takes rare or vendor-blessed glass, means the lens costs what the vendor says, forever.

You may not need a motorized lens at all

The classic reason for motorized glass is riding the iris as light changes. Our workflow removes that reason: set the aperture once, and answer changing light with the scan rate while keeps proportions true. So a simple fixed lens — the cheapest, sharpest, most reliable kind there is — runs a professional race day. Motorization becomes a convenience you can choose (we support current Computar LensConnect USB lenses, plug and play), not a tax you must pay.

1. Why does the lens aperture matter more on a photo finish camera?

At 1/5,000 s per slice, the aperture is effectively the entire light budget. A photo finish camera can’t lengthen the exposure — the racing dictates the rate — so the glass is what gathers light.
